SPAN 487 - 001: Latin American Detective Fiction and Society

In the Spanish-speaking world, how does a detective solve a crime when the government is the culprit?  Can justice be served in a corrupt society or a failed state?

In SPAN 487, we will read detective stories and see films from Latin America about the quest for criminal justice.  Works by Gabriel García Márquez, Mario Vargas Llosa, and Oscar-winning film "The Secret in Their Eyes".
