Section Information for Fall 2021
Using an interdisciplinary approach, we will study Nobel Prize Winner Gabriel García Márquez’s major works of fiction and non-fiction, as well as film adaptations of some of his works, and films about his life and legacy. You will learn how to analyze narratives in connection with central contexts and notions regarding the style of magical realism, the dictator novel genre, and investigative journalism in Latin America. You will also learn how to apply basic concepts and ideas about intersectionality, social justice, desire/love and violence to the study of narratives. Readings include One Hundred Years of Solitude (1967), The Autumn of the Patriarch (1975), Love in the Times of Cholera (1985), News of a Kidnapping (1996), and selected short fiction. Main objectives of this course include connecting narrative analysis to wider intellectual and societal concerns, and fostering comparative critical thinking, interdisciplinary research, and ethical commitment in the study of cultural production.
