This course will focus on the analysis of gender and human rights issues in 20th century and contemporary Hispanic and Latinx cultural production. We will discuss memoirs, plays, poetry collections, essays, films, documentaries, and popular culture in connection with basic notions and concepts in gender studies and human rights discourse. With a special focus on the Hispanic/Latinx perspective in the United States, we will study representations of human rights violations in several contexts including exile and displacement, torture and disappearances, undocumented immigration, and gender violence and femicide in the Americas. Main objectives of this course include communicate effectively in both oral and written forms in Spanish applying appropriate rhetorical standards, fostering comparative critical and argumentative thinking, and developing transdisciplinary skills and an ethical commitment in the study of cultural production. Being in a technology enhanced collaborative classroom, this course will allow students to develop collaborative skills that are much needed in today’s working environments.

Course taught in Spanish. All assignments are in Spanish.
