ChatGPT and Language Learning

The article examines the potential of ChatGPT for learning Spanish as a second language at the A1-B1 levels in terms of its ability to both decipher input from learners at these levels and generate responses that learners can understand. To do this, and after a brief overview of the affordances and challenges of integrating AI-based text generative tools, it describes the analysis carried out with two corpora of interactions with ChatGPT —created from prompts from students and exercises from courses at these levels. The article also presents a series of preliminary conclusions regarding the implementation of ChatGPT in the classroom, resulting from the analysis of the two corpora, aimed at promoting self-learning through ChatGPT as a conversational agent.
