Dr. Jennifer Leeman gives invited keynote talk

Dr. Jennifer Leeman was an invited plenary speaker at the 11th National Symposium on Spanish as a Heritage Language (“Cultura y corazón: Local knowledge and community engagement”), co-hosted by Texas A&M university – San Antonio and University of Texas – San Antonio last week (February 21-24, 2024). Drawing on her work in the field of Spanish Heritage Language Education, Dr. Leeman’s talk, titled “Critical language awareness as transformative pedagogy: Intersections with antiracist, decolonial, and social justice frameworks,” provided a comprehensive overview of criticality in heritage and world language education and identified key next steps and research directions for the field, including the need for all language teachers to be trained in critical language pedagogies, a founding principle of our online graduate certificate program in Spanish Heritage Language Education.
