his course examines García Márquez’s fiction taking his own ideas about social justice into consideration and applying our contemporary views on identity and social justice. How can we read García Márquez’s books today? How can they be relevant for us today? Using an interdisciplinary approach, we will study García Márquez’s major works of fiction and non-fiction, film adaptations of some of his stories, and documentary films about his life and legacy. You will learn how to analyze narratives in connection with central contexts and notions regarding the style of magical realism, the dictator novel genre, and investigative journalism in Latin America. You will also learn how to apply basic concepts and ideas about intersectionality, social justice, desire/love and violence to the study of narratives. Readings include One Hundred Years of Solitude (1967), The Autumn of the Patriarch (1975), Love in the Times of Cholera (1985) and News of a Kidnapping (1996). Main objectives of this course include connecting narrative analysis to wider intellectual and societal concerns, and fostering comparative critical thinking, interdisciplinary research, and ethical commitment in the study of literature and cultural production.

This course is conducted in English, and all oral and written assignments must be in English. 

Prerequisites
ENGL 101/ENGH 101 and 45 credits or permission of instructor.
