Section Information for Spring 2026

This course is an introduction to literary and cultural studies in the language of Spanish.  Our point of departure in this course is a perspective on Spanish-language literature, film and other cultural practices as symbolic acts of the imagination that put forth ideas, beliefs, desires and stories about the social world in which they are situated. By studying the formal vehicles of these practices – like musicality, literary characterization and cinematic montage – we will deepen our understanding on how these practices have engaged social groups in the construction of local, national and global identity. This course will also introduce you to larger questions about how cultural knowledge is organized at the university and in the discipline of Hispanic Studies in particular. Finally, Spanish 390 provides you an excellent opportunity to develop further your critical, analytical, and expressive skills in Spanish.
