Culturally responsive pedagogy: A path towards inclusive excellence in heritage language education
Online lecture by Dr. Elena Foulis (Texas A&M, San Antonio)
Tuesday, October 18, 2022 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM EDT
Online Location, Advance registration required (see event description for link)
In this presentation, Dr. Foulis will discuss how we can make our HL classes a space where we practice and implement a decolonial approach to HL pedagogy that focuses on valuing students’ local experiences of growing up bicultural and bilingual, while engaging in a national and international conversation on language use. She’ll discuss the creation of an open-access Spanish for Heritage Learners textbook as a model that not only responds to proving access to textbook affordability in our classes, but also a vehicle for developing material that historically and culturally speaks to students in the Midwest region. The textbook uses a project-based approach, so students engage in real-life applications by exploring culturally relevant topics: language use, arts, festivals, food, ethnography, digital lives, and the university. This curriculum shows how our population-specific language courses and materials validate students’ backgrounds and promote language maintenance and growth.
