Critical pedagogies have gained prominence over the last decades. They emphasize social justice and inclusivity, while actively challenging traditional educational norms. This movement has also challenged educators to rethink every aspect of their curricula. It implies reflecting on the diversity of the existing student body, including Afro-Latinx individuals and communities who have largely been excluded from mainstream Spanish educational curricula.
In this vein, this talk discusses the vital connection between critical pedagogies and Afro-Latinx representation in the Spanish language classroom. We examine how incorporating critical pedagogies can challenge existing curricula, address historical exclusions, and create a more accurate and inclusive representation of Afro-Latinx individuals and communities. Representation does matter, and Afro-Latinx representation is essential for fostering a more equitable and representative educational environment.
