Culmore in Falls Church, VA

This course involves students’ examination of the complex and varied relationships between culture(s) and globalization from the age of colonialism to the present. We will seek to understand the effects of globalization in the nearby location of Culmore, Virginia, where the Latin American demographic is close to 90%. We will also examine “globalization from below,” or how local activist movements in Culmore attempt to construct alternatives to neoliberal globalization. Finally, students will assist in an ESL class for local residents which validates community knowledge and builds social agency.

This course will be offered May 23 to June 14, 2011, MTWR 05:00 PM -08:00 PM.
